Autumn in Cashiers has a way of making you slow down.

Maybe it's the first cool morning after summer. The mountains begin trading green for gold, orange and red. Porches become particularly inviting. A drive you make all the time suddenly deserves another look.

And before long, everyone is talking about the leaves.

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Cashiers offers visitors a front-row seat to fall color — but some of the best reasons to visit in autumn aren't found on a scenic overlook. They're in the shops and restaurants, along the trails, around community tables and in the traditions that bring people together.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Color in Cashiers?

That's the question we hear every year at the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce.

The answer depends on Mother Nature.

Cashiers sits at approximately 3,500 feet in elevation, while the surrounding mountains climb considerably higher. That variation in elevation means fall color doesn't arrive everywhere at once. Cooler temperatures generally begin changing leaves at higher elevations first, with color gradually moving down the mountainsides and into the valleys.

Rather than trying to predict one perfect “peak” weekend, consider giving yourself time to explore. A drive through the Cashiers area can reveal dramatically different color as the road climbs and descends.

Get Outside and Experience Autumn

Fall's cooler temperatures make it an especially inviting time to explore the outdoors.

Hiking trails throughout the Cashiers area offer everything from an easy walk to a more ambitious mountain adventure. Waterfalls, lakes and mountain overlooks provide plenty of reasons to pull over — or lace up your hiking shoes.

And you don't have to leave the heart of Cashiers to enjoy the season. Walking paths and community green spaces offer quieter ways to experience a fall afternoon.

Make Time for the Places In Between

A fall trip to Cashiers doesn't have to be a race from one scenic overlook to another.

Stop for lunch. Wander through a local shop or gallery. Find a porch. Have another cup of coffee. Talk to the person behind the counter.

Explore neighboring Glenville, Sapphire and Lake Toxaway, where lakes, waterfalls, mountain roads and locally owned businesses offer still more ways to experience autumn in the Cashiers area.

Those stops between destinations are often where a visit begins to feel less like sightseeing and more like discovering a place.

Fall Traditions Bring Cashiers Together

Autumn also brings some favorite community traditions.

In 2025, the 19th Annual Cashiers Chili Cook-Off brought local chefs, community cooks, residents and visitors together at Lewis Hall at The Village Green for an evening of friendly competition — and plenty of chili.

That year's Falling for Cashiers scavenger hunt gave “Leaf Peepers” another reason to explore. Local businesses and scenic locations became “Leaf Keepers,” hiding leaves throughout the community and encouraging participants to discover places they might otherwise have missed.

The events were different, but the idea behind them was much the same: get out, explore Cashiers and meet some of the people who make this place special.
