Phase One of the Cashiers Greenway Ramble Opens

A significant piece of Cashiers history took shape in July 2024 with the opening of Phase One of the Cashiers Greenway Ramble and the Thomas Taulbee Memorial Entrance at the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber joined Jackson County and Vision Cashiers in WALK CASHIERS – Bringing Us Together, an initiative envisioned as a five-mile network of pathways, sidewalks, boardwalks and public spaces connecting people with the heart of Cashiers.

The centerpiece of the initiative, the Cashiers Greenway Ramble, is designed to make Cashiers more walkable while connecting residents and visitors with businesses, community spaces, public art and the natural beauty of the area.

The First Mile of the Cashiers Greenway Ramble

Phase One created an approximately one-mile route beginning and ending at the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce.

The initial section offered the community its first glimpse of what the larger five-mile network could become — creating new opportunities to walk, gather and connect while enhancing quality of life and preserving the character and natural beauty of Cashiers.

Plans for WALK CASHIERS also included small parks and gathering spaces along the network, along with Wi-Fi connectivity and pathway lighting.

Remembering Thomas Taulbee

The new entrance to the Ramble at the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce was named in memory of Thomas Taulbee, the Chamber's late executive director.

Local businesses contributed to the design, landscaping and construction of the entrance and first phase, creating a lasting connection between the project and the community Thomas served.

Public Art and Native Plants Along the Ramble

Art was also envisioned as an important part of the Cashiers Greenway Ramble.

Through a partnership between The Bascom and Vision Cashiers, art nodes along the Ramble feature original sculptures on loan from area artists. A sculpture by artist MG Morrow was installed at the new Chamber entrance for the Phase One opening.

The Oconee Bell Chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society contributed to the project through native plantings planned along the pathways.

Together, the pathways, gathering spaces, art and native landscape began transforming the Cashiers Greenway Ramble into more than a way to get from one place to another. The vision was to create a place for people to experience Cashiers on foot — and connect with the community along the way.
